On 2022, I met Eric LeGrand, a former American football player who suffered an injury that cut his career on the field.
Now, entrepreneur, writer and motivational speaker, Mr. LeGrand just opened his own coffee shop in Woodbridge Township, NJ and continues to tackle adversity and be a light in people’s lives.

Side note: The coffee is to die for, and I’m so jealous that the shop is just a few blocks from my best friend’s house!

Born in Avenel, New Jersey, Eric was a talented high school football player with dreams of making it big in the NFL. His dreams, however, took an unexpected turn in 2010 when he suffered a devastating spinal cord injury during a Rutgers University football game, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. Many thought his football career was over, but Eric had other plans.

Eric’s journey of recovery is a remarkable demonstration of how he transformed his adversity into a platform for inspiration. Against all odds, he not only regained some movement but also became an advocate for spinal cord injury research and the founder of the “Team LeGrand” foundation. His tireless efforts have raised awareness and funds for spinal cord research, giving hope to countless individuals facing similar challenges.
A year has passed since I met him, and I’ve been reflecting a lot on what would happen if what I want doesn’t come to fruition. What would happen if something turns my life upside down? I’m trying not to hold on to my passions too hard, even though I want them so bad—I try to remind myself that they’re just things, experiences—that life is what you make of it, and all I have is to be appreciative for today and the miracle that is to be alive.
Eric LeGrand’s story is a testament to the power of the human spirit, reminding us that with determination and a positive attitude, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. His journey serves as an inspiration not only to athletes but to anyone facing adversity in their lives.

I love looking at this picture. It fuels me up with so much courage to continue, but also reminds me not to hold on to things too tight.
I’m very grateful to have met Mr. LeGrand.
